Adrien Broner and Mikey Garcia are set to kick off four weeks of big fights which feature some of the biggest names in boxing.
Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) takes on Garcia, (36-0, 30 KOs) on July 29, before being followed by the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world in Vasyl Lomachenko and Terence Crawford competing on Aug. 5 and 19 respectively. Boxing’s big month culminates with the spectacle between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor on Aug. 26.
The journey begins on Saturday night in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, in a super lightweight bout between one of the stars of boxing and a star on the rise as former four-division world champion Broner faces off against WBC lightweight champion Garcia. Broner vs. Garcia is set for Saturday, July 29, and the broadcast begins at 9 p.m. Broner and Garcia are expected to enter the ring at about 10:30 p.m.

Broner vs. Garcia preview
Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) is one of the biggest stars in the sport. He’s one of 16 boxers to be a four-division titleholder but his last two fights have been a struggle. “The Problem” had problems on the scale, missing weight against Ashley Theophane and getting stripped of his WBA super lightweight title, though he ended up winning hy ninth-round TKO.
In his next bout, he had the weight moved from 142 pounds to 147 pounds for his bout against Adrian Granados, in which he won by a controversial split decision but many boxing pundits felt Granados received the short end of the stick.
Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is a rising star in the sport but like his opponent, he took an unusual road to get to this point. In Jan. 2014 after he defeated Juan Carlos Burgos, Garcia sat out for two-and-half years in a lenghty legal battle with his former promoter, Top Rank.
A new promoter and a new lease on life, Garcia’s won both of his fights including in January when he captured the WBC lightweight title knocking out Dejan Zlatičanin.
It is one of the biggest bouts in 2017. One fighter will rise while the other will fail.

Editor’s Note: In the fight preview portion of the article, we had stated Garcia had spent over a million dollars in attorneys fees to gain his freedom from Top Rank. Garcia’s counsel in the battle with Top Rank, attorney Bryan Freedman of Freedman & Taitelman, LLP based out of Los Angeles sent an email to Sporting News stating that wasn’t the case and our research was incorrect.
Mikey (Garcia) did not spend one dollar in payment to Top Rank to settle the case and gain his freedom. They let him out of the contract because of legal rulings that were about to be unfavorable and potentially affect all Top Rank fighters. While the litigation cost Mikey some money, it was no where near a million dollars and in Mikey’s and his lead litigation counsels opinion, well worth proving to all fighters that there is a way to defeat what they believe are illegal and unenforceable contracts with overreaching promoters.
